The jungles(forests) of Bihar abound in wildlife, though some of the notable game animals and birds like tiger, deer, buffalo, duck, pheasant, tec., are fast disappearing. In order to prevent the extinction of any species and to preserve them and maintain their balance in nature, seventeen wildlife sancturies and two national parks covering not less than 2,979 square kilometers of forest land have been set up. Fourteen of these sanctuaries and two national parks are located n Chotanagpur alone, while the remaining game sanctuaries are in the northern fringe of west champaran district. As a result of strict management and proper protection givrn to wildlife, the present for once has become richer than the past and the difficult task of wildlife resuscitation and conservation has been gratly achieved, so that some of the rare animals on the verge of extinction, such as elephant, gaur, etc., have considerably multiplied. The Palamu Naitonal Park at Betla, a fine sanctuary and recreation area, has been chosen under 'Project tiger' to protect and save tigers who were fast disappearing. The remaining forests of the state have been divided into 227 shooting blocks where shooting is permitted strictly in accordance with the provisions of shooting rules.
